Foetotomy is often viewed as a mysterious process that became unnecessary when surgery was invented. It should not be seen as a technique of last resort but as one of the most useful procedures in obstetrical practice. The presentation describes six techniques, five subcutaneous and one using a foetotome. Some are relatively easy and a couple are more difficult. All of them are very achievable and with practice will become routine.

They include for anterior presentation:

  • Subcutaneous front leg removal
  • Subcutaneous rib split
  • Subcutaneous evisceration
  • Pelvic bisection with foetotome

Posterior presentation:

  • Subcutaneous hind limb removal with hip flexion
  • Subcutaneous front leg removal

The major desired outcome is that participants will have the confidence to use the techniques in the field immediately.
